The Nutrition-Focused Physical Exam

Physical characteristics can offer valuable clues when assessing a patient for nutrient deficiencies, signs of malnutrition, and disease risk. A nutrition-focused physical exam (NFPE) is a systematic approach used by registered dietitians/nutritionists (RDNs) as part of a comprehensive nutrition assessment to evaluate signs and symptoms of malnutrition and other nutritional-related issues.

Although some RDNs are slow to adopt and perform an NFPE, it should be encouraged in acute facilities as an important assessment tool. Additionally, performance indicators that center on professional competence in NFPE techniques have been included in the Scope of Practice for the RDN, the Standards of Practice in Nutrition Care, and the Standards of Professional Performance for RDNs for the past decade.

The goal of this course is to provide RDNs in the acute care setting with a comprehensive overview of techniques and skills required to perform an NFPE on an adult, with a special focus on identifying malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies or toxicities. It will use review questions and scenarios to promote active learning.
